Electro-Technical Officer Program

Course Overview

Electro Technical Officer (ETO) Course is a four-month Pre-sea Training course for Graduates those who have completed Diploma or B.Tech in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Electronics & Telecommunication/ Communication Engineering or Electronics and Instrumentation or equivalent. ETO Course acts as a gateway for the Electrical & Electronics Graduates to enter into Merchant Navy.

Course Objectives

Course comprises three functions at the operational level. Upon successful completion of the training and assessment, trainees should be competent to carry out safely the electro-technical officer duties.

Course intake limitations

Trainees spend a substantial proportion of their time acquiring engineering skills in workshops. During these periods it is recommended that there are not more than approximately ten trainees to each supervisor/instructor.

Course Function

  1. Electrical, Electronic, and Control Engineering at the Operational Level
  2. Maintenance and Repair at the Operational Level
  3. Support Controlling the Operation of the Ship and Care for Persons on Board

Entry Standards

Since the minimum age for certification is 18 years, it is expected that in most cases the entry age will be at least 16 years.
No previous maritime or engineering training is assumed, but those entering the course should be following an approved program of shipboard training

Mandatory minimum requirements for certification of Electro-Technical officer
Every electro-technical officer serving on a seagoing ship powered by main propulsion
machinery of 750 kW propulsion power or more shall hold a certificate of competency.
Every candidate for certification shall:

  • be not less than 18 years of age;
  • have completed not less than 12 months of combined workshop skills training and approved seagoing service, of which not less than six months will be seagoing service as part of an approved training program that meets the requirements of section A-III/6 of the STCW Code and is documented in an approved training record book, or otherwise not less than 36 months of combined workshop skills training and approved seagoing service, of which not less than 30 months will be seagoing service in the engine department;
  • have completed approved education and training and meet the standards of competence specified in section A-III/6 of the STCW Code;

Course Certificate

On successful completion of the course and assessments, a document may be issued certifying that the holder has completed a course of training that meets or exceeds the level of knowledge and competence specified in Table A-lll/6 of STCW 2010.
