Global Maritime Distress And Safety Signal – GMDSS
Course Overview
In this course students will be trained to use marine communication equipment, including Satellite communication, and will also learn how to handle communication in ship emergencies, and join in search and rescue operation.
Course Objectives
A trainee will be enabled to: –
- efficiently operate the GMDSS equipment, and to have primary responsibility for radiocommunications during distress incidents;
- learn techniques to avoid the unintentional transmission of false distress alerts; and
- learn the procedures to be used to mitigate the effects of false distress alerts following unintentional transmission.
Entry Standards
This course framework assumes little knowledge of maritime radiocommunication practice, but a working knowledge of English as a second language. Elementary computer skills are assumed in the recommended course timetable. Additional training will be needed for those lacking basic proficiency in the use of computers.
Examination and Assessment
Examination will include practical assessments and written components. After completing the course, the communication authority will issue the GMDSS license.
