Course Overview
This course covers the requirements of the 1995 STCW Convention Chapter VI, section A-VI/4, Table A-VI/4-2.
Course Objectives
On meeting the minimum standard of competence in medical care, a trainee will be: –
- competent to participate effectively in coordinated schemes or medical assistance on ships at sea; and
- able to provide the sick or injured with a satisfactory standard of medical care while they remain on board.
Entry Standards
This course is open to seafarers to be designated to be in charge of medical care on board ships. Those entering the course should have completed training in medical first aids on board ship, such as specified in the IMO model course 1.14 Medical First Aid.
Examination and Assessment
Students shall be assessed through a written exam consisting of short answers and multiple-choice questions and a practical assessment at the end of the course.
